Attention Builders: PLEASE phase out these trends!

February 6, 2017

Love looking at house floor plans? Then you probably love critiquing those plans for how you would do it differently. Vote whether you are in favor of these design options or is it time to phase these out?

  1. Jack and Jill bathroom. Locked doors, slamming doors, fingers pinched in doors, too many doors! More practical option might be  a hall bathroom with dual sink counter and separate toilet room (think scaled down owners suite bathroom).
  2. One enormous owners suite closet. Somewhere along the design path of “his” and “her” closets, the unfairness that “her” closet was so much bigger than “his” closet, someone thought just make one big closet and let them fight it out. How about just two (or more!) large walk-in closets?
  3. Kitchen double sink. Maybe if a double sink meant double garbage disposals, this concept would work OK. One big deep sink allows for more flexibility: washing big pots, putting a lot of dishes at once into the sink to get them off the counter, or using half with a drying rack.  But two smaller sink bowls invites mixup of clean vs. dirty and food scraps in both.
  4. Free-standing tub. Granted these can be a beautiful focal point in an owners suite bathroom. But practically speaking, where are the grab bars or the ledge for a bar of soap or a magazine?
  5. Kitchen desk. In theory, a desk area in the kitchen makes sense. In practice, it depends on who is using it and when. Having a laptop or Ipad easily accessible when standing or perching on a counter-height or bar-height stool makes transitions easier between activities: think of cooking while looking up a recipe online or sliding a stool from the breakfast bar over to finish homework/paperwork in the “desk” area.

So what’s your vote on these 5 design options: yay or nay?
